i just saw antonio this week with pat metheny and chistian mc bride. at first i didnt have any interest in going and i got the tickets for free. i really didnt know anything about antonio other than he was a "clave guy." for the record he only played clave for about a minute the entire night during a solo where he was bouncing back and forth from 6/8 to 4/4. antonio blew me away. he swings super hard and his groove is huge. i dont know how a guy from mexico city can sound like elvin but his swing is/was amazing. his solos also displayed a jaw dropping amount of independence and musicality. no idea what this guy listened to but i need to get into it. i am digging out my modern drummer with him on the cover since i know i didnt read the interview.

The interview in modern drummer is really fascinating, he is an amazing person. All the more for someone who seriously got into the whole drum thing fairly late in his life. Aparently he was in Mexico's national gymnastic team when he was in his 20s!

If you want to know more about his playing and how he developed his independance check out his bit from the Modern Drummer Festival 2003. Just amazing! He ends up doing a Q&A/Clinic type session with the audience which really helps explain what he is doing and how he got there.

Don't get me wrong, Antonio is a monster player, but I draw the line when it comes to groove. Sorry guys, I just saw him play last week. If you hear Elvin in there, then you have some Elvin to research. Great dynamics, great musical sense, but the groove is not happening in my opinion. Fat groove? huh? Listen to Tain, Blade or Bill Stewart and tell me if Antonio swings like that. I know he doesn't. His sound is thin, and his groove is lite. This coming from someone who has probably seen Antonio play more than anyone in this forum.

I agree that I can hear no resemblence in the way that Elvin swings, and the way that Antonio swings. In fact when compared to Brain Blade, Bill Stewart, Tain, and many other of the contemporary jazz heavyweights, Antonio has a lot of catching up to do in terms of feel and flow. But I think that Antonio has created his own sound, and yes, it is for the most part a light, delicate, and subtle sound. He admits that his jazz playing is not as strong or authentic as most of the cats in NY, but his strength, IMHO, is his versatility and the authenticity of his latin and afro-cuban playing, mixed up with his ability to play so many other styles more than brilliantly, and his thorough musical knowledge.

Oh please LPalmer. You're a fantastic player and should be able to tell the difference with what I'm talking about. I never said he's not a force in drumming. I'm talking about comparing his feel to Elvins, or saying he has a fat groove. Those descriptions mean something to me, and they are very wrong. Jack Dejohnette is incredible, but I wouldn't call him a king of groove. I stand by my statement. Antonio has a thin lite sound, and no grease. Doesn't mean that the other aspects of his playing will not have greats wanting him in their bands. Wake up man!

jesus i always forget what a hornets nest this site is at times [img]smile.gif[/img] . there was actually only one elvin moment where he was really stretching triplets out while splashing quarter note triplets on his hi-hat. i dont think he is a hardcore elvin guy but i was shocked that he even could scratch the headspace. i would take bill stewart over anyone anyday btw. ok everyone spin up and flex again.

No problem Lou. I'm not slamming anyone. I'm just removing this God-like quality other members seem to give them. Comparing someone like Antonio to Elvin, is insane. I was surprised to hear you say what you said because viewing videos of you, I was impressed. You have as much technique and finesse as someone like Antonio.
